Language Arts

September 20, 2020

Since the start of the year, we have been reading several current event articles and stories. The topics have included: Hurricanes, Sept. 11, and the US Constitution. This week we continue reading and completing activities on the Raz Kids' story, The Recess Revolt. Please encourage your student to respond to written responses in complete sentences. This will help strengthen English skills.

The children showed nice comprehension as we worked through lessons on the 4 Types of Sentences. I have found it helpful to start the year off with this skill, as it will help the children identify and practice using each kind of sentens properly as we progress through the year. Our next English topic will include adjectives and adverbs.

At this time, I am not starting any specific Word Study list.  If this changes, I will surely let you know.

If you wish to encourage extra reading/English practice at home, I suggest Lexia Core 5, Raz Kids, and the library resources posted in the Library course in Schoology.

August 2020

We will surely be busy this year in Language Arts.  The students will read a variety of genres including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, reference materials, and biographies. The plethora of resources will surely keep the children's interest throughout the year.

We will also continue to practice our writing skills during the school year.  Frequent writing prompts, figurative language lessons, English skills, and complete-sentence written responses will ensure growth in this area.
